Electrolock's state of the art laboratories are used to identify, examine and test a wide variety of insulation materials.

Leading Edge Technologies

In Electrolock's state-of-the-art electrical and chemical laboratories, both customers and suppliers have access to the latest testing technologies to examine, evaluate and perfect emerging thermal and electrical insulation possibilities.

Tests are conducted using specified test methods including ASTM, DIN,TAPPI and IEC to provide total product analysis and applications support.

Analytical Laboratory

Leading-edge technology is used to identify, examine, evaluate and compare insulation materials. Tests are performed on chemical, electrical, mechanical and thermal properties to determine which materials work best in your application.

Our lab's capabilities include:

  • Muffle Furnace: burn out at high temperatures
  • Perkin-Elmer Differential Scanning Calorimeter [DSC]: measures and characterizes thermal properties of materials including melting point, degree of cure, and glass transition.
  • Perkin-Elmer Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer [DMA]: measures mechanical properties such as modulus [elasticity] and viscosity [damping] as a function of time, temperature, frequency, stress or combinations of there parameters. DMA is also useful for qualitatively characterizing the glass transition temperature.
  • Nicolet Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy [FT-IR]: an analytical method for chemical identification and concentration analysis; used for material identification.
  • MTS Tensile: test mechanical properties of materials including tensile, compression, elongation, adhesion, peel, and strength of sample.
  • Fisher Scientific Accumet 25 pH Meter: tests pH of materials, including special tests such as leachable chloride content with ion-specific electrodes.
  • Gurley Densometer: measures porosity of papers, films, and laminates.

High Voltage Laboratory

Tests evaluate electrical insulation properties to determine the most efficient design for your application. Tests include dissipation factor, voltage endurance, voltage breakdown and partial discharge. This lab's capabilities include:

  • Hipotronics Hipot Tester: tests dielectric strength of materials up to 100kV AC and 40 kV DC.
  • General Radio Megohm Bridge: tests insulation resistance, surface resistivity and volume resistivity of samples.
  • General Radio Capacitance Bridge: test dissipation factor, dielectrid constant, and conductance of materials.

Lemke Diagnostics Dissipation Factor Testing: used to determine power factor tip-up of the groundwall of a stator coil at temperatures up to 180°C.

Process Laboratory

Materials Performance Tests are performed to determine how various materials will perform in your specific application.

Lab capabilities include the following:

  • Dual-Head Wire Taping Machine: evaluates wire insulation materials and processing methods.
  • Heated Platen Press: allows for the production of prototypes, development of process parameters, and the evaluation of materials requiring heat and pressure for processing.
  • Process Oven: evaluates materials and processes requiring heat.

Ancillary Capabilities & Services

Tube Converting/Customization Services

An adjunct to our laboratories is our tube converting/customization services section. Here, in combination with our engineering expertise, our advanced processes allow us to deliver our products in the unique format that meets your requirements.

  • Spiral wound tubing can be fabricated to inner diameter from .065 up to 6.00 inches.
  • Tubing can be cut to any specified length [or lengths] or can be supplied as Continuous Wound Tubing in rolls of up to 100 feet.
  • Tubing can be clear, colored, striped, or printed.
  • Tubing can be thermal formed or sonic welded at the ends to seal it in a round or flat configuration.
  • Other converting services include notching, split wall or die cut patterns.
